Leon Kroll was an American painter and lithographer born 1884. Known as a figurative artist, Life Magazine described him as "the dean of U.S. nude painters," yet he was an exceptional landscape painter and also produced an exceptional body of still life compositions.
Kroll's father was a violinist. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under John Henry Twachtman, and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Jean Paul Laurens in the late 1800s.

In addition to his own work, Kroll taught at the Art Students League of New York and the school of the National Academy of Design, where he had his first solo exhibition in 1910, was named as Associate in 1920 and as full Academician in 1927. In 1930, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was also named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1950. Kroll died in Gloucester, Massachusetts aged 89.

Artist-Writer Jerome Myers in his autobiography Artist In Manhattan said:
"Leon Kroll has the eye of a hawk and the heart of a dove, which is to say that he has both intelligence and feeling. What he has given to our art is a matter of public record over more years than either he or I would care to say.
An academician and at the same time a humanitarian, Leon Kroll is a consummate craftsman, always sympathetic towards youthful talent, boldly standing up for the rights of others as well as for his own. His art activities have been prodigious, overlapping several generations. As a teacher and lecturer, he has been foremost in the van of the Woodstock tradition."

As can be read in this press release that inform about the sale of this work for almost two million dollars in a Sotheby's auction in 2011:
"The painting was created to highlight the extent of the damage caused when the Kansas and Missouri rivers swelled to 70 times their normal size on July 13, 1951, killing 17 people and displacing more than 518,000 residents.
In a further effort to shed light on the flood victims' suffering, the Missouri artist made a lithograph of the painting and sent a copy to each member of Congress urging them to expand a flood relief appropriations bill. It did not pass, and many of Benton's lithographs wound up in the trash."

In 1953, good friends for thirty years, Thomas Hart Benton and Denys Wortman were having dinner together with their families at Wortman's house on Martha's Vineyard.   Benton suggested that he would like to paint a portrait of his friend Wortman.   Long admirers of each other's work, Wortman was very pleased by the idea.  A few weeks later while Wortman was posing for Benton in his studio in Chilmark, Wortman began to sketch Benton.  So here was Wortman painting Benton painting Wortman and Benton painting Wortman painting Benton.  Great friends had begun a painting duel.

Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 - January 19, 1975) was an American painter and muralist. Along with Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry, he was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. His fluid, sculpted figures in his paintings showed everyday people in scenes of life in the United States. Though his work is strongly associated with the Midwest, he studied in Paris, lived in New York City for more than 20 years and painted scores of works there; summered for 50 years on Martha's Vineyard off the New England coast; and also painted scenes of the American South and the American West.

As we can see in the couple of images above, inspired by the practice of Tintoretto, the 16th century painter, Benton worked out the spatial relationships of the figures and light and shadow by creating clay-sculpture models, that he used for further preliminary studies and the final painting.
