On April 19 is the birthday of

Eva Gonzalès, French Impressionist painter born in 1849.
In 1865, she began her professional training and took lessons in drawing from the society portraitist Charles Chaplin.
Gonzalès became a pupil of the artist Édouard Manet in February 1869.
Like her teacher, Édouard Manet, she never exhibited with the Impressionist painters in their controversial exhibitions in Paris, but she is considered part of the group because of her painting style. She was Manet's only formal student and modeled frequently for several members of the Impressionist school. Gonzalès posed for Manet in 1869 for the painting "Portrait of Mlle Gonzalès", a work which has previously been discussed more than Gonzalès' oeuvre at her own 1885 retrospective and at Galerie Daber's exhibition for her work in 1950.
While studying under Manet, Gonzalès self-portraits suggest she was exploring her individuality and identity as an artist by presenting subtle correctives to Manet's version of her. Until 1872, she was strongly influenced by Manet but later developed her own, more personal style.
She died in 1883.

On April 20 is the birthday of

Grace Cossington Smith, Australian artist and pioneer of modernist painting in Australia and was instrumental in introducing Post-Impressionism to her home country. Examples of her work are held by every major gallery in Australia.
One of Australia's most important artists of the twentieth century, Grace Cossington Smith was born in 1892, was best known for her modernist depiction of a Sydney cafeteria, paintings of the arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as it was being built, and her late indoor scenes of doorways and windows where yellow is usually the dominant colour. Many of her scenes give a glimpse of the ordinary suburban home of her time: still lives, doorways and window sills. She also sometimes painted important events such as the World Wars and the arrival of the Prince of Wales in Sydney, which show a broader view of what was happening in Australia and the world at the time.
She used great sunlight and wonderful patterns of vibrant colour with cool colours added to shadows, giving them a sense of energy.
He died in 1984.

On April 21 is the birthday of

Francesco Foschi, Italian painter born in 1710 in Ancona, best known for painting winter landscapes. He moved to Rome in 1729 and encountered the works of other painters of veduta (views).
In 1726 he was at Fano as a student of the painter Francesco Mancini, with whom he learned to paint works with figures. However, soon Foschi specialized in painting landscapes. It seems that settled in Rome with his family (1729-1743), although not listed as a member of the Accademia di San Luca. From this period dates the first documented commision (January 1739), twelve small canvases on Ovid's Metamorphoses, works that have not survived to this day.
From 1746 he resides in Loreto, where in addition to his job as a painter, he also served as an art dealer, having frequent contacts with Count Bonaccorsi, one of the most important patrons of his time.
He died in Rome in 1780.

On April 22 is the birthday of

Eugène François Marie Joseph Devéria, French Romantic painter of history paintings, born in 1805. He held to the taste for historic subjects that he painted according to the academic formulae of the time.
He was a student of Girodet-Trioson and Guillaume Guillon Lethière and of his own brother, Achille Devéria. He exhibited for the first time at the salon of 1824 and saw success with La Naissance de Henri IV in 1827. With Eugène Delacroix and Louis Boulanger, he was one of the main proponents of the French Romantic movement in painting.
Eugène Devéria had as one of his students Auguste-Barthélemy Glaize.
He died in 1865.

On April 23 is the birthday of

Amalia Avia Peña, Spanish figurative painter born in 1930.
Her career as a painter began in the 50s in the study of Eduardo Peña in Madrid. In the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, she met many of his friends and later co-generation.
She made her first solo exhibition at the Gallery Fernando Fe in Madrid. In 1964 she entered the legendary Gallery Juana Mordo, and in 1972 in the Biosca Gallery, both in Madrid. She participated in numerous exhibitions about the Spanish realism worldwide.
Her realistic painting focused primarily in the city of Madrid, of which she portrayed its streets, shops, facades damaged by the passage of time. The first time her painting was a social component, the presence of the human figure, which is slowly disappearing. The artist herself has recognized on numerous occasions that it is not a hyperrealistic painting and technical perfection is not what most interested to her, but being able to reflect the imprint of the human, of those other anonymous lives that attracted her so much.
He died in 2011.

On April 24 is the birthday of

Cornelis Dusart, Dutch genre painter, draftsman, and printmaker born in 1660 in Haarlem.
Dusart was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade from about 1675 to 1679, and was accepted into the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1679.
His works are similar in style and subject to those of his mentor. Especially notable are his highly finished drawings of peasants, depicted singly in colored chalks and watercolor.
He died in Haarlem in 1704.

Today, April 25, is the birthday of

Christiaan Karel Appel, Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet born in 1921. He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement Cobra in 1948.
From 1940 to 1943, during the German Occupation, Appel studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, and it was there he met the young painter Corneille and, some years later, Constant; they became close friends for years.
Appel had his first show in Groningen in 1946. In 1949 he participated with the other CoBrA artists in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; this generated a huge scandal and many objections in the press and public. He was influenced by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and the French brute-art artist Jean Dubuffet. In 1947 he started sculpting with all kinds of used materials (in the technique of assemblage) and painted them in bright colors: white, red, yellow, blue and black.
In 1948 Appel joined CoBrA, a group that was not popular in the Netherlands, but it found a warm and broad welcome in Denmark. By 1939, Danish artists had already started to make spontaneous art and one of their sources of inspiration was Danish and Nordic mythology.
He died in 2006.
