_________________________________________________________

"Sueño / Dream", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 18" x 24"
Victor’s original name for this painting was The Twilight Cats of Haruki Murakami. Murakami is a great Japanese surrealist author. In Kafka on the Shore, one of the characters, Satoru Nakata, has a job searching for lost cats because he has the rare ability to converse with them.

"Producto de su entorno / Product of His Environment", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 19,5" x 23,5"

"Siempre aprendiendo / Ever Learning", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 24" x 30"

"Construyendo bloques vitales / Building Blocks of Life"

Is a series of sculptures created in 2008 and 2009.  The style is a slightly abstract departure from my previous work. Each character's body is a metaphor for life's journey. The blocks represent the individual's personal experiences—failures, successes, mistakes, achievements, joys and heartbreaks. In the same way that these experiences shape our personality, they serve as road maps to our individual destinations and building blocks for our personal image. If we step back and observe, we often become aware of how they define our physical characteristics. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "By the time you reach age forty, you have the face you deserve."

"Bandidos / Bushrangers", Victoria, Australia, 1852", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 75,7 x 156,6 cm., 1887
The Ian Potter Museum of Art, The University of Melbourne (Australia)

A work of great historical significance, it depicts the robbery of travellers by a gang of bushrangers between St Kilda and Brighton. The painting was based upon an actual event of 16 October 1852 during which, contemporary accounts report, 'a number of travellers were held up and robbed by bushrangers. A man was placed over the captives, who were tied together in groups of two and three, with strict orders to fire upon them if a hand was stirred, the ringleader exclaiming: "Put them all together, so that if you miss one, you will kill another". Strutt visited the scene of the robbery hours afterwards and his representation of it, although altered for compositional reasons, is alive with narrative detail. Strutt made over thirty studies for the work, the majority of which are housed within the collection of the National Library of Australia.

"Sin título (tres hermanas) / Untitled (Three Sisters)"

Giovannina", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 72 x 61 cm., 1864

A Girl Sitting on a Window Sill", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 52 х 99,8 cm., 1864.
Museo Estatal Ruso (San Petersburgo, Rusia / St. Petersburg, Russia)

Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna, Plucking the Belt of Vasili Kosoy Once Belonged to Dmitry Donskoy At the Wedding of Vasili Tyomny", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 147,5 x 201,5 cm., 1861
Museo Estatal Ruso (San Petersburgo, Rusia / St. Petersburg, Russia)

"Palmera / Palm I"

"Cesta en el campo / Basket in the Countryside", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 64 x 87 cm., 1943.

Museo Estatal a.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas,  (i/l) 275 x 250 cm. (c) 275 x 142 cm. (d/r) 275 x 250 cm., 1943

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 275 x 250 cm., 1942. Galería Tretyakov (Moscú, Rusia / Moscow, Russia)

"A patriotic and deeply religious man, Korin succeeded (like Deineka) in creating paintings that expressed his own state of mind while paying lip-service to authorities. Especially popular was the central panel of the triptych, the figure of the medieval prince, which reflected perfectly the atmosphere of a time when Stalin was begining to promote Russian patriotism, because Nevsky had defeated the Teutonic Knights (German ancestors of the Nazi invaders) in 1242. Korin rendered a declarative image full of inner power and inspiration. Nevsky is represented as a heroic defender of Russia. His massively armed figure appears to be physically shielding the native land behind him. His determied face is devoid of any doubts, and his hands, clad in gauntlets, grip the hilt of a might sword. Korin's starting point was the well-known phrase of the prince - 'He who comes to us with a sword shall be destroyed by a sword' - which had become a popular official Soviet slogan, chiefly because it concludes Eisenstein's great film. The prince figure stands against the background of the Volkhov River and the silhouette of the Cathedral of St Sophia in Novgorod. Behind him is the gonfalon with the image of the Saviour, whose burning gaze intensifies the emotional tone of the picture. The appearance of such religious symbols in art was perfectly acceptable at the time, even tough the official re-unification of Church and State did not take place until 1943."

On July 1 is the birthday of

Victor Viktorovich Bregeda (Виктор Викторович Брегеда), Russian visual artist born in 1963, recognized for his meta-realistic style of painting.
After attending art school in Russia, Bregeda developed his personal interpretation of creative art, that put himself in sharp contrast with his academic art training, but gained recognition in local and international contests. In early 2000, Bregada was invited to promote his work in the U.S. After a successful first art show in Hawaii, his art has been gaining steady prominence in the international art scene.
Bregeda has been particularly recognized for his contribution to contemporary Christian art, resulting in an exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, TX. His best-selling artwork, The Eucharist, became first in the series of paintings representing Christian symbolism. Other pieces include images of the Last Supper, Jesus and the idea of divine love.
Bregeda has been often compared to Salvador Dalí and other masters of the Surrealistic Genre. He positions his work in the meta-realism style with some elements of surrealism. In comparison to meta-realism, surrealism was a much broader cultural movement widely popular in the early and mid 20th century. Meta-realism can be viewed as a later Russian offshoot of surrealism with respect to the imaginative visual style. The key difference is that meta-realism primarily appeals to the superconscious - in Victor’s case strong God’s influence - while surrealism was heavily influenced by subconscious expression.

On July 2 is the birthday of

Guilloume Perez-Zapata, Colombian minimalist artist born in Medellín in 1957, self-described master of "Bolismo". He is known primarily for his sculpting and painting.
Works by Guilloume include bronze sculptures, oil painting, and sketches. He tends to focus on people in the community. His paintings and sculpting are often simple in form. His subjects have no recognizable facial features. This accentuates the similarities between people. The simplicity shows a range of human emotions, especially those shared in forms of friendship, intimate, and family relationships.
He has developed an interest in art at a young age. He studied at the Institute of Bellas Artes Medellin. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1985 and settled in Sandia Park, New Mexico.

On July 3 is the birthday of

William Strutt, English artist born in 1825.
He studied figurative and history painting in Paris, France, and England. Strutt decided to visit Australia, arriving 5 July 1850.
In Melbourne, Strutt found employment as an illustrator on the short-lived Illustrated Australian Magazine, published by Thomas Ham, as there was little demand for the figurative and history paintings for which he was trained. Some of his designs did, however, lead to commissions, including a design for a new postage stamp, and an Anti-Transportation League card. Despite the lack of interest for major history paintings in Melbourne, Strutt continued to sketch suitable subjects, including the ‘Black Thursday’ bushfires, which swept over the colony on 6 February 1851. It was from these sketches that Strutt composed one of his most notable paintings some 10 years later, Black Thursday, 6 February. 1851, 1864 (already published in this blog here), which depicted animals and men fleeing from the fire.
In February 1852, Strutt joined the growing tide of men travelling to the gold-fields surrounding Ballarat, Victoria. Despite working in the gold fields for eighteen months he found little success. He returned to Melbourne in mid-1853 and became actively involved in the city’s cultural scene, undertaking a number of portrait commissions and joining the Victorian Society of Fine Arts as a founding member.
Strutt’s interest in depicting the notable events of the colony was piqued by the events surrounding the Victorian Exploring Expedition led by Burke and Wills in 1860–61.
Strutt left the colony of Victoria in 1862. A highly religious man, he dreaded bringing up his children in what he perceived to be a godless society. Returning to England where he completed two major works based on Australian sketches, Black Thursday, 6 February 1851 and Bushrangers, Victoria, Australia, 1852.
He died in 1915.

On July 4 is the birthday of

Nellie Mae Rowe, African-American self-taught artist from Fayette, Georgia, born in 1900.
Although she is best known today for her colorful works on paper, Rowe worked across mediums, creating drawings, collages, altered photographs, hand-sewn dolls, home installations and sculptural environments. She was said to have an "instinctive understanding of the relation between color and form." Her work focuses on race, gender, domesticity, African-American folklore, and spiritual traditions.
Rowe is now recognized as one of the most important American folk artists. Her work is held in numerous collections, including many important museums.
She grew up in the farming community of Fayetteville, Georgia. She was one of ten children. It was noted that she began drawing at an early age. Her family was burdened by financial pressures and she left school after the fourth grade to work in the fields with her father, a former slave, Sam Williams. In addition to managing the rented family farm, her father worked as a blacksmith and basket weaver. Her mother, Luelle Swanson, was an expert seamstress and a quilter. Rowe's mother taught her to create dolls, quilts and small wooden sculptures.
When she was 16 ran away from the farm because she found the work to be "painful, poorly compensated and undignified." Rowe married Ben Wheat right after leaving the family farm. The couple remained in Fayetteville until 1930, when they moved in Vinings, a small rural community northwest of Atlanta. There she began to work as a domestic. In 1936 her husband died from a disease.
Rowe met her second husband, Henry ‘Buddy’ Rowe, an older widower and fellow Vinings resident in 1937. In 1939, the couple built a home together that Rowe called her "playhouse." When Henry died nine years later, Rowe, now at the age of forty-eight devoted her full attention to her art making.
Over the span of the next three decades, Rowe developed a large body of multifaceted work. In the final decade of her life, her art was shown at local and national galleries and museum.
She died in 1982.
