Sergio Bustamante [Escultura / Sculpture]

While in this post I'll focus only on sculptures made with different media (bronze, resin, ceramics), the creations of the Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante also cover painting, jewelry, furniture, etc. A career of more than 40 years has given rise to a work in constant evolution that incorporates elements of Mexican culture as well as the artist's own experiences.

Sergio Bustamante

¿Y? Pues yo no ando buscando todas. Una. ¿Cuál será? Al final de mi vida a lo mejor lo sepa.»

"La mujer que tenía el corazón roto / The Woman With the Broken Heart"
Bronce / bronze, 84 x 48 x 39 cm., 42 kg

"El Jardín de las Delicias, Gato / The Garden of Earthly Delights, Cat"
Resina / resin, 72 x 79 x 31 cm., 18 kg

"Demiurgo II / Demiurge II", resina / resin, 34,4 x 20 x 73.3 cm.

"El corazón del tiempo / The Heart of Time", bronce / bronze, 16 x 7 x 5 cm., 0,9 kg.

"La gran ilusión / The Great Illusion", resina / resin, 95 x 40 x 34.50 cm., 10 kg.

"La musa y el caballo / The Muse and the Horse", bronce / bronze, approx. 11 kg.

"No señora.

Resina / resin, 84 x 43 x 93 cm., 29 kg

"El árbol / The Tree", bronce / bronze, 44,5 x 30,5 x 17,5 cm., 11,5 kg.

Sergio Bustamante is a Mexican artist born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, in 1949.
Orphan father and mother, lived with his grandfather Jose Chong, a Chinese arrived from Shanghai who in the 1930s was nationalized and adopted a Mexican surname.
«My grandfather is the person of my life, I loved him very much, I was the only grandchild he met. At that time the government of Calles grabbed the Chinese and returned them and he was protected by a captain who advised him to change his name. He liked Sanchez, probably sounded Chinese. I lived with him until he was five, he was a wonderful man ... He took me to the Buelna market every day, bought me a toy made of paper, cardboard or tin and hid it. As the house was very large, I had all morning to find it and then it was mine.»

«That, I think, aroused my fantasy, and especially made me addicted to a search. To the search of what ... To the search I said a day of the truth, and a guy told me "there are many truths". So? Well, I'm not looking for all of them. Just one. Which one will it be? At the end of my life probably I'll know.»

"Gallo cola grande / Long Tail Rooster", resina / resin, 132 x 99 x 39 cm., approx. 36 kg.

He began with paintings and paper mache figures, inaugurating the first exhibit of his works at the Galeria Misrachi in Mexico City in 1966.
«I started painting, I made some lions and I took them to Alberto Misrachi, who had the best gallery in Mexico and sold Rivera's and Kahlo's work. I was 23 years old, he bought my work, he called me "master" paid me 5 thousand pesos for each painting, which at that time was a fortune. I would do one a week and suddenly, at age 24, I had my wallet full of pennies, I could buy a house and I went to Europe.»
In the early 1970s, he traveled to Amsterdam, where he further developed his talents. After his return to Guadalajara, he established in 1975, along with other artists, the "Family Workshop Studio" in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico.

"El lector / The Reader", resina / resin, 50 x 50 x 90 cm., approx. 16 kg.

"Malabarista III / Juggler III", resina / resin, 51 x 69 x 134 cm., approx. 16 kg.

«I do the works by vocation and letting them be whatever they are, if it is art, it is perfect, if it is craftsmanship, I am also very proud to be what I am: artisan or artist is fantastically perfect»

"El ave Fénix / The Phoenix", resina / resin, 26,5 x 62,5 x 85,5 cm., approx. 5,75 kg.

"Niño equilibrista posición 165 / Equilibrist Child Position 165"
Bronce / bronze, 39 x 9 x 9 cm., approx. 2 kg.

While Bustamante's works initially focused on painting and paper mache, his talents led, in the mid-1970s, to the creation of sculptures in wood and bronze, many reflecting animal themes. 1979 marked the inauguration of innovative furniture designs in wood and glass with bronze accents, currently available in distinctive patterns and motifs. The creation of ceramic sculptures in the mid-1980s provided avenues for the use of color and form in ways not previously explored. In 1992, the initiation of an extensive line of exquisite jewelry in bronze, gold and silver, many set with precious and semi-precious stones and, again, often reflecting animal themes, marked a new and expansive direction for his creations. In this same year, a new series of paper mache sculptures was introduced. In the new millennium, Bustamante continues to explore new paths for the further expression of his imaginative and gifted talents.

"El astrólogo / The Astrologer", resina / resin, 94 x 48 x 85 cm., approx. 26,2 kg.

"La metempsicosis / The metempsychosis", resina / resin, 103 x 50 x 39 cm., 13,5 kg.

Sergio Bustamante does not mind that his works are copied. As he says «everything is part of a process, which does not bother me, because what is copied, it must influence, leave a career, an apprenticeship. It is like the songs of Juan Gabriel, who sings them all. I will continue to sing new ones, to continue and that families can live from those designs. I love it and it's an honor.»

"La musa y el elefante / The Muse and The Elephant", bronce / bronze, 54 x 27x 67 cm., 31,8 kg.

"El poeta / The Poet", bronce / bronze, 103 x 38 x 34 cm., approx. 35 kg.

«Once, a friend told me that he knew a Chinese story, from a lady who ask for a rooster to a very old Chinese painter, who was a character in the village. He said "come in a year." The lady returned within a year and said "And my rooster?". "Ah, you are the rooster lady ... Wait for me - he said. He drew the rooster and gave it to her. "Oh Master ... why did you make me wait a whole year? You did it in just 5 minutes." "No, lady, this appears in 5 minutes, but look at my drawers." He began to open drawers and a lot of roosters came out. So life is not an accident. You draw your life, and you draw it again, and you draw it again, and tomorrow, who you are ... Well no, it was not the drawing right now, it's that I've spent all my life trying and redrawing myself. I think that marked me a lot.»
